The HR Generalist plays a supporting role within the Human Resources department, under the direction of the Human Resources Business Partners (HRBPs) and the Deputy Chief Human Resources Officer.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assist employees navigate and find answers to questions about HR policies and programs, covering any combination of HR-related topics, including recruiting, compensation and benefits, training, employee and labor relations, safety, etc.
Conduct analyses of employment-related data and compile raw data into usable reports
Provide support to HR Business Partners, including preparation of charts, presentations, Excel spreadsheets, etc.
Assist in developing and executing personnel procedures and policies, providing guidance and interpretation
Participates in development of HR objectives, including identifying future staffing needs
Suggest new procedures and policies to continually improve efficiency of the HR department and entire organization, and to improve employee experience
Collaborate with Staffing team to develop effective recruitment strategies
Exercise professionalism and confidentiality at all times, building trust and strong partnerships with clients
Monitor employee morale and company culture
Handle all administrative tasks for onboarding, new hire orientation, and exit interviews with recommended actions if necessary, including entering data into HR information systems and updating employee personnel records
Assist with development of talent management and succession planning strategies and implementation
Assist HRBPs with complaints regarding sexual harassment, discrimination, or other instances of workplace harassment and assist in any necessary investigations and disciplinary actions
Act on behalf of, and in alignment with, the HR Business Partners in their absence
Ensure legal compliance of state and federal regulations and applicable employment laws, and update policies and/or procedures as required

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field
At least two (2) years of Human Resources experience
Demonstrated experience supporting client HR needs
Strong knowledge of state and federal employment regulations
Working knowledge of commonly used HR concepts, best practices, and procedures
Working proficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
Experience in a fast-paced team environment with strong attention to detail
Resourceful, analytical, and problem-solving aptitude
Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, ethics, and cultural awareness
Demonstrated experience responding to clients with a customer service attitude
Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality
Ability to learn new technical systems as needed
Ability to comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English
Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences
Ability to supervise or work effectively with diverse workforce
Ability to adhere to rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the MBTA including the EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation policies
Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and role appropriate MBTA’s medical clinic screening, potentially including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screening
Have a satisfactory work record for the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting, including overall employment, job performance, discipline, and safety records (infractions and/or offenses occurring after the closing of the posting and before the filling of a vacancy may preclude a candidate from consideration for selection)
Ability to uphold the rights and interests of the MBTA while building and maintaining effective relationships with employees and co-workers
Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service

Substitutions Include

High School Diploma or equivalent plus seven (7) additional years of HR work experience can substitute for a Bachelor’s degree
Associates Degree from an accredited institution plus three (3) additional years of HR work experience can substitute for a Bachelor’s degree
Master’s Degree from an accredited institution can substitute for two (2) years of HR work experience

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

Experience with HRIS systems
Additional HR training or experience
PHR or SPHR certification
Experience working in an union environment
